Decisions in Raisani & Choi
In two recent decisions the AAT overturned the decision of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to refuse to grant citizenship to applicants under the age of 18 who did not hold Australian permanent residence. Both decisions are significant because they will impact on future applications made by children under the age of 18 who apply for Australian citizenship without first becoming Australian permanent residents.

AICWA review
In July 2008 AICWA announced that it was going to raise its English language requirement to an IELTS score of 7 by 1st January 2010 for those seeking a skills assessment as a welfare worker. This decision had the potential to impact on several hundred international student, already enrolled in courses which would otherwise have satisfied the AICWA requirements. AICWA has since announced that changes will only come in to effect from 1st February 2011. TRA delays implementing MAP
The new assessment guidelines for TRA which were expected to come in to effect from 1st September 2008 has been delayed. This means international students who have been gaining unpaid work experience can still apply for their work experience to be assessed as part of the 900 hour work requirement under pathway E of the Uniform Assessment Criteria (UAC)

Changes to fees – 2009
A new fee structure will be introduced from 1st January 2009. Clients who have already signed fee agreements with SKY LEGAL will not be affected by this change.
